Get on Trend with Brat and Suzie this season

With the designer Spring Summer 2013 fashion weeks drawing to an end, here at Brat and Suzie HQ we have had great fun picking out the colours, print and silhouettes that will influence our next collection. But do not fear we have NOT forgotten what is on trend and in stores right here, right NOW! Here’s a round up of the 3 biggest trends from the Autumn Winter catwalks and how to incorporate your Brat and Suzie piece into them;

Red Red Wine
Of all the colours on trend this season our money’s on that ever so seductive shade of red, red wine, it is by far the most flattering colour whatever your skin tone and is great for a rich and luxurious look. Charlotte from Brat and Suzie has teamed her Brat and Suzie Nordic stag bodycon dress with a chunky knitted cardigan, woolley hat , wet look leggings and chunky suede boots., oh and Amber the Chihuahua…….

Knit and Caboodle
Fun and quirky, animal emblazoned intarsia knits are an autumnal must have. Designers such as Peter Jenson and Paul and Joe do them so well, but it’s hard to find a good affordable high street version, until now…….. Grab your Chihuahua knit version at Brat and Suzie now – limited stock available. We think it would look cool with sequined shorts like these from River Island.

Having a Hoot
Another massive trend this season is Owls and woodland creatures. Burberry Prorsum’s collection, named Town and field, included country critters such as birds, owls and dogs naively embroidered onto shirts or printed and appliquéd onto oversized T-shirts and knits. Get your fuzzy owl sweater from Brat and Suzie, and if you really want to get the Burberry look you will have to style it with a herringbone tweed pencil skirt and a waxed parka.

We Love Slogan Tee's

Has there ever been a time when slogan tee’s weren’t stylish? It seems to us like they’ve been reigning in on the ‘hot’ list since the mid 1980’s, and maybe there’s a reason for that - they are pretty versatile (and can express your feelings without having to say a word).

‘Smitten With Kittens’ and ‘Puppies, Piglets, Kittens’ are the two we have on offer at Brat & Suzie, and we wear them constantly. They’re perfect for a casual dress down, and so comfortable they make living in jeans and t-shirts seem like an obvious lifestyle choice.
When we’re not wearing Brat & Suzie? We like an oversized tee with leggings, or something sweet and simple with a good pair of skinny jeans. How do you wear yours?

Festival Fashion With Brat & Suzie

Festival season is well under way, with some already done and dusted for the year, and some quickly creeping up on us. A favourite of ours last year was ‘Secret Garden Party,’ where we turned up with a pop up shop and sent many of you on your way adorned in your favourite animal.

One of the main reasons we loved Secret Garden Party was for its totally relaxed dog policy, they were everywhere!

Will you be attending any festivals this year? Fingers crossed for sunshine.

Bloggers Do It Better

If you’re anything like us you spend a lot of your time nabbing style inspiration from some of the most influential women out there right now – fashion bloggers. Magazines and top models are all well and good, but sometimes real girls need real fash-piration from other real girls on the same kind of budget they're on. We’re talking mix and match accessories, teaming something old with something new and –gasp – trawling the sales racks for something cute that won’t have you reaching for the store cards.
One of our favourite things about reading fashion blogs is stumbling across one of our style icons rocking a piece from our very own collection. And you know what else? We love how they always manage to look so cool when they’re doing it.
Fashion your seatbelts| birdy dress - a part of a past collection

Ladies, thanks for making our outfits your own, we love seeing what you can do with a little personal style, a little Brat & Suzie, and a lot of fashion forward thinking.

Have you come across any of your favourite bloggers in Brat & Suzie lately? Let us know in the comments if you have, we’d love to have a nosey at their style!

How Pinteresting!

One thing guaranteed to distract us from a long day of work is beautiful photographs of what other people are doing with their time. Is it just us, or do pretty pictures always make you feel like you should be off doing something spectacular, no matter how much you’re enjoying what you already do with your days? Shopping for vintage perhaps, doing a kooky DIY or even boarding a plane and going to the beach for a week.

So how do we deal with these cravings? We trawl your pin boards on pinterest. If you haven’t discovered this beautiful little site yet we suggest you give it a go, and maybe even follow us if you fancy seeing our personal style board, some really cute pets and some inspiration for the home.

Happy pinning!

Meet The Illustrator: Andrea Jane Burrows

Hi! I am… Andrea Jane Burrows, a freelance illustrator currently based in Birmingham.

By day I work as… A Sales Assistant in a clothing store.

I studied… Fashion Design with Communication at Birmingham City University, I graduated in 2011.

When I was growing up I wanted to be… a vet, it was my dream for years. I was obsessed with the show 'Animal Hospital' hosted by Rolf Harris. My first job when I was 15 was a kennel assistant at the local vets, I loved playing with all the animals and the best bit was helping out at puppy training parties.

I got into illustration by… It started off with textiles in school, and then I went on to study Fashion Design at college and university. I’ve always enjoyed looking through fashion illustration books and really admired different illustrators, I thought I would love to do it myself, but I never believed I had the talent. It turns out I just hadn't found my style yet. This happened when I was at uni; I had a brilliant tutor who really helped me discover a style that worked for me.

The thing I love most about what I do is… seeing the finished product, being able to stand back and look at it after putting in all that hard work. My friends often send me pictures of them wearing the tops with my illustrations on them, I love seeing how people style them in different ways.

I first heard about Brat & Suzie when… I was doing my final project at uni, I had decided to design a collection of hand illustrated printed clothing, and was looking for a company to collaborate with. When I saw their designs I instantly knew they would be perfect. And when they showed interest in my work I felt so excited, I didn't want to get my hopes up too quickly, but when I found out they were definitely going to use one of my illustrations I couldn’t hold my excitement in. It was amazing to see the photo shoot and see my little owl illustration on a t-shirt available for the public to buy.

The process I went through when designing my animals was… I tend to pick an animal first, I’ve had a few trips to zoos and safari parks, so I look at those pictures and find an animal that inspires me, or one that looks really cute. Then I look at the current trends and try to pick an outfit or accessories to turn the animal into a stylish little creature.

My favourite design was… That’s really difficult; I create new favourites all the time. But I guess I’m very fond of my owl illustrations, an owl in a woolly hat was the first one I did for Brat & Suzie.

My favourite animal is... it's got to be a lion, I think they’re amazingly powerful animals, and they look so cute, if I wasn’t scared of getting my head bitten off, I would love to cuddle up with one and use its mane as a pillow. Also my star sign is Leo so technically I’m a lion too.

And if I could have any pet in the world it would be… I think I would have to choose a penguin; I just love the thought of having a little penguin waddling around the flat.

I couldn't live without… Sunshine, it puts me in such a happy mood when the sun comes out to play. I hate to be stuck inside on a sunny day; I have to be out there soaking up the rays.

On my iPod right now is… Too close by Alex Clare. I can't get enough of that song at the moment.

This time next year I’d like to be… Working as an illustrator full time, this could be either carrying on with more freelance, or working full time for a company.

The Queen Of Style

As we all know, the Jubilee took place last weekend - and amidst the parties, the bunting and (of course) the rain, we were just dying to see what Kate Middleton would wear for the occasion. As usual, in a vibrant red number perfectly complimenting the outfits of those around her, she didn't let us down.

Now, Kate may have become the embodiment of a fashionable princess/guilty indulgence in recent times, but did you know the Queen was once something of a style icon herself? Here are three of our favourite looks..

We imagine she keeps her animal adorned clothing for much less formal occasions.. a casual lunch with Prince Harry, perhaps?

Meet The Illustrator: Emily May

Hi! I am.. Emily May. I live in London, and
by day I work as… a freelance Illustrator and Graphic Artist.
I studied… Graphic Art and Design at Leeds Metropolitan University and came away with a First Class BA(Hons) Degree in 2010.
When I was growing up I wanted to… work for Disney, and then it didn’t take long before that changed to Pixar. Along the way there were dreams of joining the Spice Girls or becoming a vet, but I always went back to drawing.
It’s very much in my blood, my whole family is creative, but the real inspiration came from my Granddad who worked as an animator for Gaumont British Animation. I remember from a very young age sitting on his lap whilst he looked at my drawings and showed me how to improve them, I believe I have inherited his perfectionist ways.
It was only really when I got to University that I discovered my love for design and that these big childhood aspirations were early signs of my love for character design and story telling.
The thing I love most about what I do is… that my job is my hobby. I guess that’s a lucky thing.

I first heard about Brat & Suzie when… their T-shirts kept popping up in stores around Leeds, where I studied. I emailed them with a link to my work and they asked me to come and meet them at their studio in London. I’ve been working on designs for them ever since. They are really lovely girls to work for and I love that they’ve had me really involved in more than just designing; I’ve also been along to photo-shoots, trade shows and festivals with Brat and Suzie.
My favourite design was.. my Fox Head Dress Tee. Within a few hours of it getting a fair bit of airtime on Brat and Suzie’s BBC Dragons Den pitch, it had sold out. I have recently designed the Cheetah Tee and the Boston Dog Tee, both of which I am very pleased with.
Since working with Brat & Suzie I have.. worked on commissions for various clients such as Urban Apothecary London and Warehouse, and have continued to build my portfolio.
And now I’m working on.. a few new projects, one being a print design for a menswear designer and also a few personal commissions which I always enjoy. I’m waiting for the go ahead for an interior design project which I am really looking forward to starting.
My favourite animal is.. the wolf.
And if I could have any pet in the world it would be.. a wolf, but because that will never happen I will probably get a husky and pretend it is a wolf.
I couldn’t live without… my friends and family, they are all that really matters.
On my iPod right now is… a lot of Ben Howard, Laurelle and Alexander, Alt-J and Azealia Banks.
This time next year I’d like to be… better at cooking.

Model Spotlight: Flora & Fauna

We're talking mermaids. Ariel, more specifically, as Flora speculates on whether the red headed heroine will be included in season 2 of 'Once Upon A Time.' "I just love the modern twist on fairy tales," she gushes, as Fauna smiles demurely in the background, "Fauny was just glad to see Red Riding Hood included, weren't you?"

And so it begins. The infectiously adorable twins talk amongst themselves while I politely drink my tea and wait for them to catch a breath. Suddenly I have a new found appreciation for what it must have felt like to be Elizabeth Olsen growing up with MK and A. You’re invited to the party, but you're not quite V.I.P enough to get into the private areas. That is until.. "So I hear you guys are doing a spot of modelling this season?" I ask, pretending to be casual even though we all know this is why I'm here. It's my in, and out of nowhere we're really talking..

You were approached by Polly and Charlotte after they heard about you from a friend, how did it feel to be asked to model?
Flora - Honestly? We were shocked.
Fauna - But honoured! Obviously. We're big fans of the brand and have always thought it'd be a good move to feature more sea life. I mean, look at this
(at this point they both turn to admire their surroundings - currently a lavish aquarium in a top secret London hotel. The football pitch sized tank has been equipped with the very best in undersea furnishings, and they have room service ready to prepare fresh shrimp at the drop of a hat.)

it's beautiful in here. Who wouldn't want to wear that?
Flora - I agree with Fauny, plus, we were asked to model by twins. We just couldn't turn that down.

Ah, the twin thing. Was it a big thing for you guys to work together? Or do you always come as a pair?
Flora - I wouldn't say always but.. pretty much, yeah. We grew up in the Mediterranean Sea with a big family, and when we decided to branch out it was really good for us to have each other.
Fauna - We travel alot, it's nice to always have a companion on adventures. Modelling isn't our day job (the girls work at a charity for endangered and injured seahorses) but when we were asked to do this, we knew we could only do it as a pair.
Flora - It just feels right this way.

Speaking of your modelling, rumours are flying about Fauna and Brat and Suzie model, Ziggy Wolf. Is there any truth to that?
Flora - Why do you think she liked Red Riding Hood so much? She didn't read it for the cloak!
Fauna - The truth is, I have a little bit of a crush on Ziggy. Who wouldn't? He's just so cool and.. knowledgable. But seriously, it would never work out. He's a wolf, I'm a seahorse. Where's the sense in that? Where's the middle ground?
Flora - Well if it worked for Eric and Ariel..

Changing the subject back to fashion, do you know what you'll be featured on yet? T-shirts? Dresses?
Flora - Ah, well, that would be telling, wouldn't it?
Fauna - You'll just have to wait and see like everyone else, I'm afraid. All we'll say is that it's going to be good...

At that, we wrap up the interview. The girls have plans with friends and need to get a move on, I’m told. “It’s all very Sex And The City” Fauna giggles as she shows me what she plans to wear. “We meet up, we have Underwater Cosmos, and we talk about our love lives.” Whatever they have planned for the evening, the twins look stunning, and as I’m saying goodbye they insist we meet again before their modelling gig is up. “It was lovely to meet you,“ they say in unison.

“We love making new friends!”

Flora and Fauna will be available as a part of the Brat and Suzie high summer collection.

Katy Purry

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Katy Perry is well known for her love of cats, and with new documentary 'Part of Me' hitting our screens in July she'll surely be looking for something to wear when promoting.

'Smitten With Kittens,' K.P? Pirate Cat Crop, perhaps?

(Also available in turquoise and as a hoody!)

You can see the trailer for Katy's documentary here:

Anyone else hoping Kitty Purry makes a cameo appearance?

"Why are you called Brat & Suzie?"

Believe it or not, we get asked this a lot. And the truth? Brat & Suzie were the names of our very loved childhood cats.

My mum had Brat (named because my Auntie said she was a spoilt brat!) as a kitten and Suzie belonged to the neighbours. They became friends and Suzie, who wasn't very well looked after, would always be at our house eating Brat's food.

One day, my parents moved house. Suzie was hanging around on the last day of the move.. so my Mum grabbed her and moved with her!

This is Brat.. no-one has a good picture of Suzie.

Thinking of names for the brand was really hard, but Brat & Suzie just seemed to work.
